What is cordwood?

Cordwood construction is building method for the exterior walls of a home. It consists of wood, morter and insulation. We plan to build ours with 16 inch lengths of split and debarked wood. So the wall will be 16 inches thick. Log ends will be exposed on the outside and inside of the house. They will not be covered up. The diagram below shows the cross section of a cordwood wall. Morter fills the gaps between the wood on the inside third and outside third of the wall. Insulation is stuffed in between the mortered sections of the wall.
